Points To Ponder

  • Telling your story:  getting all your history on paper isn’t necessarily the Résumé ’s job, it’s response.  A widget maker prospective employer (‘hiring authority’ in search consultant lingo) wants to know that you’re qualified to do widgets, not your other work, which may well have been completely irrelevant to widgets.

  • Format:  Your Résumé can be structured in any of several ways, or formats (i.e., the order in which categories are listed, positions listed in reverse chronological order vs. a consolidated history, one page vs. multiple pages).  There isn’t any one format that’s universally better than the others.  It’s a question of which one will serve you best.

  • Why use a professional Résumé writing service:  Of the approximately 8,000 people who brought their Résumé s to me for re-writing (not counting the 3,000+ we did from scratch), I advised thirteen to keep the Résumé they had.  Many people who can do a proper Résumé writing job can’t take the time.  What is your time worth?  An effective Résumé is one that elicits response, doesn’t embarrass it’s owner (beware putting ‘career objection’ on your Résumé ) and properly addresses the position (or career field) objective.

  • Specifics:  One can say ‘excellent communication skills’, or excellent anything else til the cows come home, but it’s specifics that count.  ‘Supervised 500’ instead of ‘excellent supervision ability’.  ‘Beat last year by 15%’ instead of ‘year-over-year increases’.

  • Prepare for your Résumé writing interview:  Have answers at the ready for questions, including:  your name, address, ZIP, phones and email, position objective(s), awards and other achievements (include specifics, such as percentages in above bullet).  If you are applying for specific positions, have contact information for your cover letters, courses, workshops and seminars you’ve attended.  Things to bring:  old Résumé s, job descriptions, position announcements, transcripts, performance evaluations.

  • A word about cover letters and position objective statements:  Dear sir type cover letters don’t work nearly as well as ones that list names and addresses.  In the letter, instead of ‘with your company’, give the company a name.  Mention the position you’re interested in.  If you have a contact name, put it on the envelope.  Getting your Résumé looked at, if only for ten seconds, beats the heck out of some receptionist sorting mail and throwing yours in the trash.  Objectives:  Position with ABC Company as Sales Representative II’ will win out over ‘Position with your company’ every time.

The Cost Of Résumé Preparation

Your Résumés By Design résumé, based on anticipated return on investment, is the most value-packed item in your job search inventory of tools.

We’ve all heard the saying ‘it doesn’t cost, it pays’. So it goes with a hard hitting résumé, one that addresses your job or career objectives directly. The résumé that elicits more interest is the one that capitalizes on achievements, rather than merely listing job duties.

Of course, we need to explain items pertinent to your objective that the reader wouldn’t assume without the explanation. Résumés By Design will suggest a format best suited to your needs. There are several résumé formats (how the page is structured), the most popular being the chronological. It lists your employments in reverse chronological order. The functional, or skills format focuses more on skill areas. the curriculum vitae is an expanded résumé typically used in education and medicine.

Also, there are myriad sub-formats, which largely confuse résumé clients and most résumé writers. Tell us where you'd like to go career-wise and we’ll suggest the ideal format for you.

One page résumé $60 - $175
